PSG Defeats Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
