Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
