No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
